Free Exit
A six-by-six parking lot, your red car stuck in the third lane, and a single exit on the right. Each car moves only in the direction it points. There's no luck here: there's only the right order to slide them in.
Get the red car out
Tap a car to select it. It only moves along its own lane.
Getting started
- Pick a car. Tap it. The free squares in its lane light up yellow.
- Slide. Tap a highlighted square and the car slides over to it. Even if it's three squares away, it counts as one move.
- Open up the third row. That's where the red car exits, on the right.
- Free the red car. Once the path is clear, slide it out to the exit.
- Made a mistake? Undo steps back one move at a time. The scoreboard shows the level's optimal count.
Controls
Mouse or trackpad
Click a car to select it: the squares it can slide to light up. Click a highlighted square to move. Clicking the car again cancels the selection.
Touch
Touch works just like clicking: one tap picks the car, another tap on a highlighted square slides it. The squares on the 6×6 board have a comfortable touch area on phones.
Keyboard
Tab cycles through the 36 squares and Enter or Space activates the square in focus. With a car selected, ← and → slide horizontal cars and ↑ and ↓ slide vertical cars; an arrow key off the car's axis is ignored.
Tips that work for this game
- The red car is almost never the first piece to move. Start by asking who's in front of it, and who's blocking that car.
- Only vertical cars can leave the third row. Every escape plan runs through one of them, so find them before you move anything.
- Count the free squares before you slide: a three-long car only fits where there are three squares in a row. It's the mistake that costs the most moves.
- Pushing a car all the way into a corner often locks two lanes at once. When you have a choice, send it toward the side that still has room to spare.
- The number under Optimal is the board's true optimum, computed by exhaustive search before the game went live. If you've used twice as many, there really is a much shorter path.
Questions about Free Exit
Get the red car out through the exit, on the right side of the third row. It's the only car that leaves the board: all the others are there to get in the way.
No. Each car moves only in the direction it's pointing: horizontal cars go left and right, vertical cars go up and down. No car rotates, and none passes over another.
As many as are free in front of it. A single tap on a highlighted square slides the car all the way there, even if it's three squares away, and that counts as one move.
It's the smallest number of moves in which that board can be solved. It's not a guess: each of the four levels was solved by exhaustive search before going on the site, and the number shown is the proven optimum.
No. There are four fixed boards, and each one went through a checker that confirms a solution exists. There's no way to land in an impossible traffic jam.
Yes, as many times as you like. The Undo button steps back one move at a time all the way to the starting position, and the move counter goes back with it.
It saves your lowest number of moves on each level, in your browser's local storage. None of it leaves your device or gets sent to us.
Yes. Tab cycles through the squares and Enter selects the car in focus; with a car selected, the arrow keys slide it along its axis. An arrow key off the car's axis is simply ignored.
