Accessibility

All seven games can be played start to finish without a mouse. Below, what each one accepts and what is still missing.

What applies to the whole site

  • A "Skip to content" link appears on the first Tab press on any page.
  • Every control that receives focus shows a visible yellow outline: we do not rely on the browser's default outline, which disappears against our pink background.
  • Anyone who turns on "reduce motion" in their system sees no decorative animation: the site respects prefers-reduced-motion.
  • Every game has an aria-live region that narrates state changes: the computer's move, a wrong letter, a lost life, a solved level.
  • The menu, the cookie notice and the preferences panel all work by keyboard, and the panel closes with Esc.

Nine Men's Morris

Tab moves through the 24 points of the board in numerical order; Enter or Space activates the focused point. Each point's spoken label gives its number and what is there: empty, your piece or the computer's piece. When you form a mill, the screen reader announces that it is time to remove a piece, and only the removable pieces stay enabled. While the computer is thinking, the whole board is disabled, so Tab never lands on an invalid move.

Hangman

You can play without touching the on-screen keyboard: just type the letter. Any key from A to Z counts as a guess. If you would rather navigate, Tab moves through the 26 on-screen keys and Enter activates the focused one; keys already used are disabled and skipped. Every guess is announced: whether the letter was in the word or cost you a chance.

Block Breaker

and move the paddle; Space or Enter launches the ball. For anyone who prefers bigger targets, the , Launch and buttons below the board do the same and respond to Tab and Enter. Game over, a cleared screen and the final score are announced through the aria-live region.

Let's be frank about the limit: this is a reflex game, and the keyboard is a slower control than the mouse. It is playable by keyboard, not equally easy by keyboard. That is the difference we are able to deliver today.

Free Exit

Tab moves through the 36 spaces of the parking lot and Enter or Space activates the focused space: if there is a car there, it is selected; if it is a free space in the selected car's lane, the car slides to it. With a car selected, and move horizontal cars and and move vertical ones; an arrow off the car's axis is ignored rather than doing something unexpected. Each space is announced with its row, its column and what is in it.

Contrast and size

The site's text is gold on deep pink. That pairing was not chosen by eye: we measured the contrast of every combination that actually appears on screen and adjusted the background pink until all of them passed the 4.5:1 minimum that WCAG 2.1 Level AA requires for body text. The site's worst case (the gold of the title over the lightest band of the background, at the top of the home page) sits at 4.8:1; over the dark panels, the same gold reaches 9.3:1.

The yellow buttons flip the logic: neon background and very dark plum text, at 11.8:1. The pieces, letters and spaces in the games are sized in units relative to the board, so they grow with the screen: zooming in does not break the layout.

What we have not done yet

We do not yet have arrow-key navigation between the points on the Nine Men's Morris board: only Tab, which across 24 points means up to 24 stops. It is the most requested improvement and the next one in line.
